Complete installation notes are available in Chapter 1: Getting Started in the Pendragon Forms Reference Guide.

By default, the software will be installed in C:\Program Files\Forms3.

Upgrading to Pendragon Forms 5.1

If you are already using Pendragon SyncServer 4.0 or earlier:

The Pendragon Forms 5.1  installer includes a new version of Pendragon SyncServer (version 5.1). You cannot run Pendragon SyncServer 5.1 and an earlier version of SyncServer on the same PC, so your existing SyncServer software will be replaced.  The new SyncServer is backward compatible with your existing installation of Pendragon SyncServer 4.0.

For evaluation purposes, we recommend installing the Pendragon Forms 5.1 evaluation on a separate PC.  If you install the 14-day Pendragon Forms 5.0 evaluation on a PC with an earlier version of Pendragon SyncServer, you can continue to use the Forms 5.1 SyncServer to synchronize Forms 4.0 clients, but will be unable to synchronize Forms 5.x clients.

If you are not already using Pendragon SyncServer:

The Pendragon Forms 5.1  installer includes a new version of Pendragon SyncServer (version 5.0).  During installation, you will be prompted to enter licensing information for Pendragon SyncServer. Leave the fields blank to get a trial version of the SyncServer. This trial version never expires, but it only permits one connection at a time. You will also be prompted for the server password for your SyncServer.

For additional information, see Version 5.1 Synchronization

Upgrading Your Existing Pendragon Forms Software

Be certain to backup your existing Pendragon Forms installation before installing Forms 5.0.

It is recommended that you NOT uninstall earlier versions of Pendragon Forms.

Synchronize all handhelds to send all new and changed records to the Forms Manager database.

Install to the same folder where Forms was installed - typically the C:\Program Files\Forms3 folder3. If you install into your existing Forms3 folder, your previous version of Forms will be upgraded, your original Forms database will be renamed, and when you open the new Forms Manager, you will be prompted to import all of your form designs and data.  If you are not promoted to do the import, see page 235 in the Pendragon Forms Reference Guide.  DO NOT UNINSTALL THE EARLIER VERSION OF FORMS.

Pendragon Forms 5.0 ships with a single-connection version of Pendragon SyncServer, please see the instructions for setting up the SyncServer Service Manager.

After you install Forms and restart your PC, you will be asked if you want to import the form designs from the previous version of Forms. Choose Yes.  Your form designs, data, user list, user groups and multi-user license codes will all be imported into the new version of Forms.

If you will be deploying to Pocket PCs, see the instructions for Installing Forms on Pocket PC devices

Installing the Pendragon Forms Manager Desktop Software

Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive or double-click the name of the downloaded file to run Pendragon Forms Setup, and then choose Install Pendragon Forms 5.1.

If you are upgrading from an earlier version of Forms, install to the same folder where Forms was installed - typically the C:\Program Files\Forms3 folder.  Your original Forms database will be renamed, and when you open the new Forms Manager, you will be prompted to import all of your form designs and data.  If you are not promoted to do the import, see page 235 in the Pendragon Forms Reference Guide.  DO NOT UNINSTALL THE EARLIER VERSION OF FORMS.

Type of Installation:

Choose a Typical installation if you are installing on a PC that will synchronize handhelds via a direct cradle or cable connection.

Choose a Network server installation if you are installing on a server that will synchronize handheld devices connection form other workstations of connecting wirelessly.  A network server installation must be done on a server with a fixed TCP/IP address.

Choose a Network client installation if handhelds at this workstation will synchronize to Forms on a remote server.

Access Version

After selecting a type of installation, you will be prompted to choose which version of Microsoft Access you have, if any.  If you do not have Access, you will be prompted to install a runtime version of Access 2003 that is included with Pendragon Forms.

You will be prompted for the directory folder where Forms will be installed.  If you are upgrading from an earlier version of Forms, install to the same folder where Forms was installed - typically the C:\Program Files\Forms3 folder.

SyncServer Service Manager

Once Pendragon Forms is installed, you will see a Pendragon SyncServer Service Manager screen.  Pendragon Forms 5.0 ships with a single-connection version of Pendragon SyncServer, which is the technology that enables handheld devices to synchronize to the PC.  If you are using the single-connection version of SyncServer, leave the Company Name/Licensee and Serial Number fields blank.

On the SyncServer Preferences Screen, the Server Address field contains a special IP address (127.0.0.1) that always points to the local PC.  The default Server Port is 201.  Keep these settings for a Typical installation .
